I checked on COtrip.org to find out how Wolf Creek Pass was doing. Snowpacked, but plowed and open. Going for it!  The route US 24 West to Buena Vista, US 285 South to near Monte Vista. CO 112 as a quick shortcut to US 160 West. Wolf Creek Pass is where we go over the Continental Divide. After that, we roll down the hill into Durango to hang out with my sister!

Daun’s flight out of Philadelphia got cancelled due to the snow as his flight was about to be de-iced. So he rented a car, and attempted to drive back to Dayton. Turnpike was closed (snowy hell), so he headed to Glenside. (now known as Glensicle ;) )

After he got here, we ordered Pizza (of course). Becky started having a rather bad allergic reaction to a medication, so we took her to the emergency room. She’s a-okay now thanks to the doctors there!


Tomorrow, we’re leaving around 9 or so. Daun and I will caravan all the way to Dayton, OH. Becky and I will continue on in the Scirocco from there.

I completed installing the Megasquirt system from my old car into the new one.  This system controls the engine – the fuel and the spark. The car can be both more powerful and efficient with the Megasquirt system, which is tunable with a laptop. The car’s old fuel injection system was Bosch CIS – a mechanical fuel injection system. With the wideband oxygen sensor, I can run the engine lean on the highway for more MPG. In my old car – I averaged 36mpg. (Epa rating is 28 mpg)

 

It uses a 1999 Saturn SC1 coolant temperature sensor, fuel rail from a 1991 Jetta, Oxygen sensor from a 2003 1.8T New Beetle, intake manifold from a 1992 VW Fox, intake temperature sensor from a 1989 Chevy Camaro, a fuel filter from a 1996 Golf, a throttle body from a 1988 Scirocco 16v, and some other various random parts. Despite the disturbing variation of weird parts, it looks a lot simpler than it was before.

The ultimate destination is the Bonelli VW Show near Los Angeles in California on November 13th. I have three weeks.

This is going to be a very Colorado-heavy trip. Visiting home, ya know. It being November, I’ll have the snow tires on the car. It will fell a little absurd driving around in California with them, but I guess I gotta do it!

So, here are the dates:

October 30th DRIVE for 12 hours to wherever hotel in Indiana or Missouri
October 31st DRIVE another 12 hours to my mom and dad’s house in Divide, CO.

November 8th or 9th, I will drive to Durango, CO to visit my sister.

Friday, November 11th we drive to Los Angeles, CA to spend the weekend for the Bonelli show.

Monday November 14th back to Durango, CO
Tuesday November 15th back to Divide, CO

Friday November 18th Drive to Missouri or Indiana
Saturday November 19th Drive back to Glenside, PA.

The roadtripmobile: (oddly, I have not taken a photo of the car in a while!)

This car is a different car than I used in the 2008 roadtrip. This car is the same year/model etc. – a 1984 VW Scirocco. This car is Mars Red.

What happened to the white car?  The white car had a stress crack in the firewall/strut tower and underbody that had always been there – but it got much worse in May 2011. With 300,000 miles, I retired it, saved all the parts, and scrapped the shell.  Many parts have already made it into the red car – including the transmission!

You may remember that I visited the park on my 2008 roadtrip.

There was a marathon going on downtown in Providence, so I had to get a little creative, and I think it turned out much better than normal!
