- Me and the Scirocco in Texas
Roadtrip Blog from Timbo's 84 Scirocco
We washed our cars, found some big Texas sky, and took some pictures.
We also had a big Texas Pizza!
Well, the original hard disk is toast. All of my pictures are gone.
I am borrowing an 80GB drive from Morio in Texas. Thanks a bunch!!
Posting this from my newly-formatted install of Vista. It took like 3 hours with all the dang updates. Now I just have to reinstall my map software and re-make the trip map.
Anyone who sent me their address or cell number before, it is lost now. Pleas re-send it to me at timjmcconnell@gmail.com
My computer broke due to condensation issues – the hard drive is dead, hopefully I will have it fixed by Monday…
In the mean time, here’s all of the pictures I’ve taken in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas!
Special thanks to Morio in Austin, TX, who I am staying with, and who I am using his computer!
Montgomery is a very cool little city, very clean, not much traffic. (at least that I saw
)
I don’t know too much about Alabama. I know that the capital is Montgomery!
There were lots and lots of signs for the different highways. But on the highways themselves, the signs are very sparse – you have to drive 5 miles to see the next speed limit sign.
I passed within 20 miles of Panama City, Florida. It would have been nice to visit if I had more time.
I saw a Turbo Porsche, then a Learjet on a pole. I also saw several helicopters on poles.
Interesting thing: There is a McClure Town right next to Troy, Alabama. You might remember Troy McClure for Simpsons episodes such as “A Fish Called Selma” and “Bart the Mother”
The red car is an AE86 Toyota Corolla. This is a cool car – it’s a hatchback, 4 cylinder, rear-wheel drive. It was made even more popular when it was featured in the Anime series Initial D – about drift racing.
I took US highways into Florida, not interstates.
Note the horizontal Florida traffic lights. Funky!
Randall (California 16v) and Fraser (frd206) met me in Tallahassee. Florida’s state capitol building was HUGE, and impossible to get a good picture of from so close.
I spotted this Mk2 Jetta Carat at a gas station. The owners didn’t care though. It had mk3 alloys on it.
And finally – look how crazy this service plaza is that I pulled off on. It could be a racetrack!
I wish I could have gone more into Florida, but there were no more people in the state who wanted me to come down. Special thanks to Fraser who drove all the way down with me, he bought me a couple of tanks of gas, he bought me lunch a few times, then he gave me cash as I left!! YOU HELPED A LOT!! THANKS!!
Atlanta is a beautiful city! And Georgia’s state capitol is the best looking one yet!
Next stop? Tallahassee!
Got the State Capitol, Met Rich (StockTDI) and his friend and had lunch, then stopped at BMW’s manufacturing plant to take some pictures!!
South of the Border is a huge travel plaza kind of place that has MILLIONS of fireworks, horrible advertising, landmarks out of nowhere, and all the good stuff.
Got into South Carolina, and I am safely in Charlston with Xavsbud, his wife prepared a very good meal of southern Grits and Shrimp! AWESOME!!
Planning for tomorrow’s trip. I have nowhere to stay for the next several states.
I have Xavsbud in Charlston, SC, and Morio in Austin, TX – So I have Alabama, Mississippi, Louisanna, and East Texas to drive through.
Raleigh is the capital of the Tar Heel state. Not sure why they call it that, but if my brakes go out, and I have to stop by putting my foot out the door, I’ll have some tar heels!! ![]()
Also note the MPG I got on this last tank – 38 MPG – GREAT!!
We got a pretty good picture of the state house here. The front side would have been impossible to get a good picture with the cars.
We got off I-85 at Exit 53, so I took a pic. For those non-Scirocco readers – 53 is the Volkswagen platform code of the Scirocco. It’s in the VIN number too. two16vs challenged us to get pictures with the number 53 in it – so here it is!!
Also: note the menu!!
Fraser and I drove to the most important capital today, the Federal Capital! Also: I’m not sure what is correct: Capital, or Capitol. One means money, the other is the places I’m visiting.
Gas mileage – I was stuck in traffic for almost half of the last tank, much of the rest of it was for city driving. 32MPG is still not bad. My goal for tuning is to get above 40MPG constant, and at least 45 MPG when I’m driving really nice!
